Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration

I really like Windows 10, but there is one problem I still haven’t managed to fix.

Every now and then when my computer wakes from sleep the Internet connection (Wi-F-) is disabled.

I can fix this by going to Settings/Network and Network and running the Troubleshooter. But I want to find out why this keeps happening and I just can’t find the answer anywhere.

There are a lot of folks having this problem and mostly with earlier versions of Windows. There are a lot of answers but none of them have helped me.

Sigh!

When my Internet Connection is disabled, I go to Settings/Network and Internet.

There is where the Status is shown:

I click Troubleshoot:

TheTroubleshooter does its thing and this comes up:

"Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration"     Fixed.

OK that’s great, but I still don’t know why this happens and I want a way to prevent this from happening.

Maybe someday I will find the answer!

My Saturday Morning With Microsoft Word

Sometimes I use Microsoft Word to document problems and steps I take to ‘fix’ problems. I usually take screenshots, but occasionally I forget and then the documentation is incomplete and I have to try to see if I can re-create the problem.

So, I get a strange web page and I wanted to insert a screenshot of this page into a Word document, but every time I tried to insert it, Word would ‘stop working’ and would have to close.

Bummer!

Troubleshooting began.

First, I re-booted my computer. No change. Word still stopped working when I tried to insert a picture.

Next I ran CCleaner, no change. I decided to run a repair.

I opened the Control Panel and went to Programs and Features, selected ‘Microsoft Office 365 and clicked Change.

First I did a Quick Repair but that didn’t help.

Next I did an online Repair:

No joy, Word still closed when I tried to insert a picture.

I opened RevoUninstaller Pro and uninstalled Microsoft Office 365.

I went online to my Microsoft account to download a fresh new copy of Office. I changed the default to 64 bit and downloaded and installed Office.

Joy! It worked! All the Office apps I use had all my settings intact and now Word works as it should.

If this hadn’t worked Office Libre was going to be my office suite. I would have really missed Outlook, but I need stuff that works!

Goodbye to Karen’s Replicator

I used Karen’s Replicator to back up my files for years and it has always worked perfectly. It worked fast and I never lost a file. I never hesitated to recommend this program and always considered it to be one of my indispensable utilities.

Enter Windows 10 Creator and that changed.

I first noticed Replicator was taking a much longer time to run than usual. I usually set the backup to run and would leave it running while doing other things not on my computer.  This time it was taking way too long!

After my WordPress disaster, I did have a lot of new files so I made a backup and that is when I noticed the slow backup process. I suspected it might have been because I did have a lot of new files, but then I went on my merry way to other things. Big mistake!

The only thing that saved my newly created folders with files (and there were a lot of them) was the fact that I copied them to my backup external media. I copied them because copy and paste is really fast on my almost new laptop and I was in a bit of a hurry.

I am not sure when I noticed Replicator showing ‘completed with errors’. I admit, I had not made a file backup for a while. Not good, but there it is.

I decided to test Replicator to see what was going on. I set up a new folder in My Documents and populated it with the new folders. I then made a new folder on my external media, made a new job in Replicator and ran the job.

This is how it went.

At first it seemed to be going ok, but very slow.

When it finally completed it showed this! No warnings!

When I checked the backup folder on external drive, this is what I saw:

No files were copied.

I am very sad. I know if Karen were still with us, she would have 'made it all better' but sadly Karen is gone.

This is an example of why sooner or later software almost always will need to be updated. Something in the new Windows 10 Creator prevented Karen's Replicator from operating as it should.

Now I was on the hunt for a new file backup utility. I do complete system backups with Macrium Reflect Free, but I need a reliable file backup.

I found SyncBackFree and it is just what I was looking for and it works great!
