Yahoo Mail was always free, but not to download to your email program unless it was a plus account. I did find out how to download using IMAP, but now I found out you can also download with POP!
When did this happen? Did this start with neo? (neo is the new Yahoo format for Mail and Groups) I decided to search and find out when this happened!
I found lots of sites giving work-a-rounds on how to download Yahoo mail using third party apps. It was suggested U.S. users switch to another Yahoo country as Yahoo allowed free download mail for other countries.
But now on Yahoo's site it tells us how to download our email into an email program!
Access your Yahoo Mail account with another mail program
Finally I found this:
New Yahoo! Mail Finally Gets Free Email Forwarding, POP Access
So it did start with neo. Or at least so it seems. I must have missed that announcement or was it announced? Apparently it happened some time in 2013 (maybe August?), but whenever it happened, it is welcome news.
Finally Yahoo has joined the ranks of other web based email providers! And users can safely backup all those carefully hoarded emails to their computers.
Hackers have been known to take over email accounts. If they are really malicious, they could deleted all those emails and even of the owner manages to recover the account, all those saved emails are gone for good. But if the emails have been downloaded to a computer, there they all are, safe and sound. Hopefully the computer has been backed up as well!
